Maud Hart Lovelace: A
Minnesota Childhood
14 min DVD ages 7-12
with
study guide and lesson plan
$18.00
plus $3 handling
Presents an overview of the Betsy-Tacy books
and the life of Lovelace. Introduces young readers to the real Betsy Ray Ð
Maud herself. Comparisons of book illustrations by Lois Lenski and Vera
Neville with photos of Maud, her family and friends as they really were help
children define and appreciate historical fiction.
Discusses examples of how life was different for children
at the turn of the twentieth century in a small Midwestern town Ð what children
did for fun, at school and downtown and what they thought of the outside
world. Photos and video clips provide glimpses of Mankato, Minnesota, then
and now.
Maud was interested in the changes in communication
technology during her lifetime. We include a timeline for ÒA History of
CommunicatingÓ from the Capital ChildrenÕs Museum to use as an interactive
experience with children. In the Media Literacy section of our study guide,
we discuss steps OxCart took to transfer its 1983 sound filmstrip to DVD
format twenty years later.
Excellent background activity for Minnesota students in
grades 3-8 who participate in choosing a title each year to win the Maud Hart
Lovelace Book Award!
